TSmoke-Free Calgary believes that protecting children form exposure to second-hand smoke should be a top priority for governments. Banning smoking in vehicles carrying children under the age of 18 will help to protect children from the harmful effects of second-hand smoke and send a clear message to youth that smoking is not a normal behaviour.
Laws prohibiting smoking in vehicles carrying children have been adopted by the provinces of British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Ontario and Nova Scotia, as well as the Yukon. Both Newfoundland and Quebec are currently considering legislation. In Alberta, the Town of Okotoks has a bylaw protecting youth 16 and under from smoking in cars.
